Lufthansa dares a new attempt| Digital luggage tag gets a second chance
The luggage strap should finally go digital. There have been many techniques for this in the past. So far, however, none has caught on. Now the manufacturer Bagtag dares a new attempt in cooperation with Lufthansa.
Lufthansa is starting a new attempt to make the luggage belt digital. As Airlines.de reports, instead of paper, a flexible, small device is to come onto the market in the future. This should be able to be attached to hard-shell cases as well as to those made of fabric.
The Bagtag is about the size of a smartphone.
The new edition is now a small e-paper display that does not require a power supply for the pure display. The device, which measures 143 x 68 x 11 millimeters and weighs 110 grams, draws its energy from a 3V button cell for data transmission only. However, according to the manufacturer, this is enough for around 2,500 flights.
We attach the "Bagtag" either with adhesive strips or a luggage strap. However, if you always use the same suitcase when traveling, you can also screw the device firmly to the piece of luggage.
RFID or Bluetooth is used for data transmission. The usual baggage carousel information such as the destination, transfer locations or the name and data of the owner is saved.
Currently only usable with the Lufthansa app
The catch, however, is that the device can currently only be used when traveling with the Lufthansa group. In addition to Lufthansa itself, this also includes Austrian and Swiss. What is additionally complicated, however, is that the luggage badges can currently only be transferred from the Lufthansa app to the bag tag. The mobile applications from Austrian and Swiss are not (yet) compatible. In addition, the smartphone used must have at least Android 4.4 or iOS 8.4.1.
However, as Airlines.de reports, the manufacturer is currently working on getting other carriers on board. Interested travelers can purchase the Bagtag for 89 euros from the manufacturer's website.
A little over a year ago, the Rimowa company started a very similar project. The difference to the bagtag gadget, however, was that the small screen was permanently installed in the respective case. But even before that, there were various ideas of not having to print out the luggage strap at the airport. So far, none of them have caught on. Although the reasons for this were not always the same.
