Lufthansa offers new digital luggage tag

The "Rimowa Electronic Luggage Tag" is now history, and Lufthansa is now making a second attempt at a digital tag. This time it can be used with different luggage.

The Lufthansa Group is once again offering its passengers a digital baggage system. The "Bagtag" solution comes from the Dutch DS Tags Group. It's not dissimilar to the failed Rimowa Electronic Luggage Tag, but more flexible than it.

As usual, the luggage tag is digitized and shown on an e-paper display that does not require a power supply for the pure display. An important advantage over its predecessor: the bagtag is sold separately - currently at a price of 89 euros - and can be used with a wide variety of items of luggage. It doesn't matter whether it's a hard case or a fabric variant, both should work, because the bagtag is attached directly to the piece of luggage.

In addition to mounting with adhesive, screwing or use with a luggage strap is also possible. However, since the bag tag is not a direct part of the suitcase, there is a fundamental possibility that the display will be lost on the way. To prevent this, it should be glued near the handle, for example.

The differences to the Rimowa E-Tag also lie in the technical specification. This is how the Bagtag supports RFID technology. The information on the piece of luggage, such as the destination, diversions or owner, can therefore be read out wirelessly by radio. The manufacturer promises that less luggage will be lost thanks to better legibility.

The network carriers of the Lufthansa Group, i.e. Austrian, Lufthansa and Swiss, are so far the only airlines where the bag tag can be used. As with the Rimowa E-Tag, the Lufthansa app must be used for this - the Austrian and Swiss apps cannot handle the bag tag. As the manufacturer announces, other carriers are to follow.
